Dr Joy Desai trained in his undergraduate and postgraduate period at the BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad with a spate of gold medals to his credit, achieving a position within the first three ranks always. He completed his neurology DNB at the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai and proceeded to the Royal London Hospital, London UK for a three year neurology fellowship. He then trained in clinical epileptology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2000. He completed a certified course in comprehensive clinical epileptology at the Cleveland Clinic in 2000 and at the University of Munich in 2003. Since 2000 he runs the Epilepsy Clinic at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. He has supervised, managed and followed up more than 5000 patients with poorly controlled epilepsy from 2000 to 2010. He has successfully guided and counseled more than 80 patients with refractory epilepsy to undergo epilepsy surgery. His main areas of research interest include epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and the neurology of systemic diseases. His other passions include trekking and photography.
